Welcome to North Clyde photos

The North Clyde Archaeological Society organises, from time to time, excursions. This is a record of some NCAS outings and some individual members outings. The NCAS website at Spanglefish  provides more, in depth reports, on a wider range of activities.

The idea behind this website is to give the viewer a flavour of what the North Clyde archaeological Society does. They are recording history in the Helensburgh & Lomond area but do travel further afield to look at other sites of interest.

Millbrae Cottages

Details

Today was a society revisit to to Millbrae cottages. the aim was to have a look for a previous building on or around the site. Finds included clay marbles, pottery and an old penknife.

Kilmory knap chapel

Details

The second vist of the day was to Keil Knap Chapel. it is situated on the western coast of Knapdale, the medieval chapel of Kilmory lies about 4km south of Castle Sween and stands within a walled graveyard that overlooks the Sound of Jura. The chapel stands within the Township of Ardnaw.

The views from the top are stunning, and show further it’s strategic importance, offering a sweeping vista of the wide flood plain of the River Earn below, and covering several major mountain passes.

Keil Chapel

Keills Chapel was built in the 1100s and was dedicated to St Cormac. It contains almost 40 carved stones, which range in dates from the AD 700s to the 1500s.

Kilmory Knap Chapel

Kilmory Knap Chapel was built in the early 1200s. By the late 1200s it was a dependency of the parish church of Knapdale at Keills. But judging by the early Christian carved stones found here, this was also the site of a much older church.
