Welcome to North Clyde photos

The North Clyde Archaeological Society organises, from time to time, excursions. This is a record of some NCAS outings and some individual members outings. The NCAS website at Spanglefish provides more, in depth reports, on a wider range of activities.

The idea behind this website is to give the viewer a flavour of what the North Clyde archaeological Society does. They are recording history in the Helensburgh & Lomond area but do travel further afield to look at other sites of interest.

Upper Torwood This is just the authors name, it comes becuse it is just above Upper Torwood road in Rhu and is only recorded as part of the author walking the land.

Peaton Woods

Peaton Woods

Peaton Woods Our interest is the sea cliffs and in particular a cave. There is also the old road from Coulport Ferry that would take you to Roseath Castle and the remains of an old bridge.

Ronachan Dun

Mains(ruins)

Details: Corvus; 18 January 2023

Mains(ruins) Appears to be some sort of homestead farm, or at least the ruins of one, situated above the track that runs behind the Hill house.

The views from the top are stunning, and show further it’s strategic importance, offering a sweeping vista of the wide flood plain of the River Earn below, and covering several major mountain passes.

Keil Chapel

Keills Chapel was built in the 1100s and was dedicated to St Cormac. It contains almost 40 carved stones, which range in dates from the AD 700s to the 1500s.

Kilmory Knap Chapel

Kilmory Knap Chapel was built in the early 1200s. By the late 1200s it was a dependency of the parish church of Knapdale at Keills. But judging by the early Christian carved stones found here, this was also the site of a much older church.
